Introduction to College of Humanities

     In order to serve the needs of national reconstruction and keep up with the times, this University was authorized to found the College of Humanities Education in August 1989 to integrate the work of teaching, research, service, and extension education in humanities. This college was renamed the College of Liberal Arts in April 1997. The past deans were Dr. Yu-kang Ying, who served from August 1989 to July 1991; Dr. Hu-lin Chou, from August 1991 to July 1997; Dr. Ching-chi Chen, from August 1997 to July 2000; Dr. Lian-shang Wu, August 2000 to July 2003;Dr. Pen-shui Liao. from August 2003 to July 2006,The incumbent Dean is Lian-shang Wu. Starting from August 1997, the dean was voted into office by full-time faculty members.

     The aim of this College is twofold: first, in terms of scholarly development, to cultivate high-level scholarly experts; second, to cultivate finest teachers in the humanities in high schools. Additionally, the College works along with the other Colleges and administrative units to foster the spirit of humanities in faculty and students, thus helping the University march towards excellence. This College also has a mission of promoting extension studies and propagating the spirit of humanities throughout the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Area and Southern Taiwan.

     After Department of Fine Arts, Department of Music, and Institute of Visual Communication Design withdrew from this College to form the College of Fine and Applied Arts in August 2003, there remain Department of Chinese (with doctoral and master's programs), Department of English (with doctoral and master's programs), Department of Geography (with doctoral and master's programs), Institute of Taiwanese Languages and Language Instruction, Institute of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (established in August 2003), Institute of Classics (established at the same time as the previous one), and Institute of Hakka Culture, which started enrolling students from the 2004 academic year. With never-ending teaching, reading, and studying during the past thirty years, this College has surely become an important place for cultivating experts and scholars in humanities in the Kaohsiung and Pintung areas.
